SUMMER ends in Dymock with the weighing of potatoes from a bucket.

This is one of the annual competition highlights of the Late Summer Flower and Produce Show, which took place this year on Sunday September 21, in Dymock Parish Hall.

Show spokesperson, Jenny Thick, said the show was well supported, with 205 exhibits, although this was "slightly down on last year", because of recent stormy weather.

She said: "The highlight of the afternoon was the weighing of the potatoes .

"Each competitor had grown potatoes in a bucket from one solitary potato. The Blandford family,Trevor and Ruth swept the board with their potatoes, - Trevor’s weighing in at 7lbs 9oz and Ruth’s weighing in at 7lbs 1oz.

"The next heaviest weight was Joe Bloxsome’s, of 6lbs 2oz."

Mrs Thick added: "Harry Bloxsome won the children’s section, with a weight of 3lbs 8oz.

"Nigel Thick grew a marrow of 84 lbs and a pumpkin weighing 112lb, and he won the heaviest marrow and heaviest pumpkin cups."

Mr Thick also won the cup for the most points in the flower section and the Ken Norrey Cup for a superb vase of mixed flowers.

George Trigg from Ledbury won the cup originally donated by his late brother for the most points in the vegetable classes. He won six first prizes in total.

Eileen Ball won the Ernest England Plate for the best vegetable grown within 2 miles of Dymock with a pair of vegetable marrows.

And Jenny Thick herself won the Cookery Cup.
