Bishopswood

BISHOPSWOOD WI – Members met on October 10, at 2.30pm. Over 30 members attended and opened with Jerusalem as usual, although unaccompanied as the pianist was on holiday. The president then took the business meeting.

Various upcoming events were announced, both locally and countywide. They were reminded of the fundraising event in November, a joint venture with the village hall committee, which will be a French evening with French food and wine. Cost is £8 for two courses, the date is November 6, at 7.30pm, tickets available on the door. There were two members with birthdays this month, Julia Brain and Yvonne Wilken.

President Ann Jones went on to remind that next month is the AGM, and that two of the committee members wish to stand down this year. Members were asked to think about who would make good replacements. As Ann said: “If we do not have a committee we do not have a WI,” and many of the committee members have stood for several years, so perhaps it is time for some new blood. Happily by the end of the meeting they had two volunteers.

Tea was then served and everyone settled down to the speaker for this month. Sandra Snell of The Flower House in Ross came to give a flower arranging demonstration.

What a treat that was. So much was learned, about various foliage plants, how they could be used, whether they would dry so they could be re-used, and how to make the most of an arrangement with very little in the way of outlay. She was very knowledgeable and inspirational, even for those in the “press and plunge brigade”. She did three arrangements, all of which were stunning. The first was presented to Ann Garner, who had announced, that after many years would not be rejoining WI because of family commitments.

Ann was delighted with her prize, although sad to be leaving. The second arrangement was presented to Margaret Blomfield on the occasion of her wedding anniversary, and the third was donated as a raffle prize and won by Maureen Mojer. Needless to say all recipients were very pleased. The rest of the raffle prizes were won by Kathy Hargest and Beryl Taylor.

The competition this month was for “an arrangement containing three flowers and foliage”. This was won by Sheila Trezona, Peggy Williamson was second, and Maureen Mojer was third. The vote of thanks was given by Alison Kinder, who echoed all thoughts when she said how enjoyable and inspirational the demonstration had been.

The next meeting (the AGM) is on November 14, at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome. The meeting closed at 4.30pm.

Knighton

KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB – Last month was busy but very worthwhile.

At the beginning of the month we had an evening food stall at the Bucknell Show and appreciated the support of those attending this popular event. The following weekend we were proud to welcome the Treorchy Male Choir to Knighton and, due to the generosity of those attending, we raised over £1800 to support the air ambulances and other local charities.

The choir also raised over £700 on the night from a collection for Ty Hafan children’s hospice and were very grateful to everyone for their donations.

We finished the month with two social events – our annual president’s night at the Castle Inn, Wigmore and a steak and bowls evening at the Grove in Leominster.

The strength of our club is this mix of social events with regular meetings and fundraising and we are very proud of this. Just remember that all the money we raise goes to our chosen charities, as our running costs are covered by club membership.

Find out more about us at www.knighton.rotary1150.org.

If you want to enjoy the company of like-minded people, as well as possibly get involved in what we do, come along to any of our Wednesday meetings.

CEILIDH FOR AMNESTY – Members of the Teme Valley Ceilidh Band are busy rehearsing for their next performance, which takes place on Saturday in St Edward’s Church Hall, Knighton.

The dance is organised by the Knighton branch of Amnesty International, the charity that works for prisoners of conscience, people put behind bars solely for their beliefs. The band was formed in 2011, and currently numbers about 12 musicians including players of fiddle, flute, cello, whistle and even tenor horn. New members are always welcome. The band have supported several community projects, as well as wider causes. Last year the band played at the farewell social for a group of young Palestinians who camped for a week in Knighton, raising money towards the costs of their stay.

They have organised benefits and events for the Teme Valley Environment Group and the Knighton Tree Allotments Trust.

In July they provided a lively musical accompaniment to the ceremonial unrolling of the Knighton long pink peace scarf.

The band also perform regularly at Folk down the Track. On the third Thursday of every other month music lovers take the Heart of Wales Line to arrive at Knucklas at 7pm for an evening of folk music at the Castle Inn.

Ceilidhs are always convivial and enjoyable and the dance on Saturday will be no exception.

Mick Green will be doing the calling, so there will be something to please everyone, including ceilidh novices.

The founder of the band, Camilla Cancantata, says: “If you enjoy music and dancing, or if you’ve never been to a ceilidh before, then do come to this one, even if you just want to listen. Those who think they can’t dance but want to try may surprise themselves and have fun and support an excellent cause at the same time.” The music starts at 7.30pm and entry will be by donation in aid of Amnesty. There’s no bar, but people are asked to bring food and drink to share with others. Ring 01547 528866.

Ross-on-Wye

ROSS-ON-WYE ROTARY CLUB – Tomorrow is World Polio Day, providing a live- streamed global status update on the fight to end the disease. Rotary supports the World Health Organization director-general’s recommendations that describe polio as a public health emergency of international concern, including the request that countries that are actively exporting the wild poliovirus (and all polio-endemic countries) ensure that all of their residents and long- term travellers are immunised against the disease before travel.

Overall, remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio. Now only three countries remain polio-endemic: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Efforts will be ramped up in these endemic countries, because from them polio can re-emerge to infect children in places where it had previously been stopped, such as was seen last year in Syria and the Horn of Africa. Rotary has contributed £800 million, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunise more than two billion children in 122 countries. For further information, or to donate, visit endpolionow.org.

Ross Rotary 1,000 Hills Community Project. Whilst Pat and Philip Dazeley and Sylvia and Brian Cole were holidaying in South Africa they visited Inchanga where the 1,000 hills project is located. It’s Zulu name “Ikhaya Lo Thando” translates as home of love.

In 1989, Fawn Leppan and the late Alan Paton, set up a feeding programme in response to devastating floods that ruined crops.

The following year, it was realised that the community was in need of medical assistance because of the prevalence of AIDS/HIV related illnesses, and a primary healthcare clinic and infant nutrition programme were started. With the help of many generous donors, they were able to build their own centre in 2005. This enabled the volunteers to care for orphaned and vulnerable children, the elderly and those suffering from HIV/ AIDS, providing over 1,500 consultations monthly.

The project serves a community of 30,000, providing 1,200 meals daily from short date food supplied by local supermarkets. Regular food is essential as AIDS and TB drugs cannot be taken on an empty stomach.

Within the project there is a crèche and nursery, as well as a school for children up to the age of six. There are facilities for basic adult education and a computer skills centre.

This care is obviously very costly, and the project needs goods or cash donations. If you feel you can help please contact Philip Dazeley on dazeley@btopenworld.com as Rotary has the means to distribute these donations without the fear of corruption diluting them.

If you have any unwanted reading glasses, these are wanted by the elderly of the community who do craft work to raise money for the project. If you can help, Miles Morgan Travel in Ross has agreed to act as a collection point for these.

FARMERS MARKET – Will take place in the village hall on Saturday from 10am - 12.30pm. Locally sourced produce will be available, along with refreshments.

Stephen Harley-Sloman from Fragment Publishing will be there. He said: “I am a photographer, artist and counsellor and began publishing my images as greetings cards in 2006. A new garden in 1989 became a passion for plants which, in turn became a love of photography which lead to my own greetings cards. These feature very personal images encompassing my garden or where I live in Herefordshire and I try to give a sense of who I am, by including thoughts and feelings in a note on the back of them.” Contact 07910656144 or fragmentpublishing.com.

Harvey Sayce always attends the market. He said: “My name is Harvey. I run my own business called Feathered Friends selling bird seed. I offer eight different mixes as well as Fatballs. I would like to help other disabled people, like myself, to sell bird food and go out and about in the big world getting their own business. I have a starter pack available with everything you will need to get going. I can come to your first market to tell you what happens and answer any questions or queries and tell you what is in the seed mixes - harvey@sharedharvest.co.uk.”
