A PUMPKIN is said to ward off evil spirits on Halloween but those who want a little extra support against trick or treaters can use a special police poster this year.

'No trick or treating' signs can be downloaded from the West Mercia Police website or found in local police stations.

High visibility patrols will also be out on the streets over the next few nights to help keep people safe and deter antisocial behaviour.

Posters are also available for shop keepers to stop those under 18 from buying flour and eggs.

Inspector Janet Marsden said police wanted to remind people that elderly and vulnerable members of the community may find trick or treating distressing while others may not celebrate Halloween.

Police are also offering the following advice:

  • Young children should never go out trick or treating without being accompanied by an adult.
  • Do not knock on the doors of strangers, only go to the houses of people you know.
  • Never go into a stranger’s house.
  • Keep to well lit areas, wear bright clothing and carry a torch.
  • Remember road safety.
  • Take care not to frighten elderly or vulnerable people.
  • If a house is displaying a ‘no trick or treaters’ sign, please don’t knock on the door.
  • Keep your tricks within the law, if you cause any damage you can be prosecuted.
  • Children, don’t be offended if your local shop does not serve you with eggs or flour. Police have been working with local stores to discourage their sale to young people.
