THE owners of a historical relic which was once thought to be the Holy Grail are offering a reward for its safe return after it was stolen last summer.
The Nanteos Cup – believed to date back to the 1400’s – was stolen in a burglary at a home in Weston-under-Penyard, near Ross-on-Wye, between 9.30am on Monday July 7 and 9.30am on Monday July 14 2014.
The family who own the Nanteos Cup are now offering a reward for its safe return and information leading to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the offender or offenders.
The cup is a medieval mazer bowl, a wooden cup/chalice. It is a dark wood cup and was kept in a blue velvet bag.
It was historically known as being the Holy Grail because it had a reputation for healing and was reportedly carried over to Britain by Joseph of Arimathea,
who is said to have founded a religious settlement in Glastonbury.
People would often drink water from the cup in the hope that it would cure
their ailments.
The family is offering a reward of £1,000 and West Mercia Police is offering an additional £1,000.
Anyone with any information about the burglary is asked to call DC Tony Lewis or DS Andrew Bennett at West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 146s of July 2014.
