Bartestree

NEW DEFIBRILLATOR - Thanks to the partnership between the Football Association (FA), The British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Bartestree Playing Fields Association, Bartestree Sports Pavilion has been equipped with a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD).

The defibrillator is a portable device that can be used by any member of the public to help restart the heart when someone has a cardiac arrest. This is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body and they lose consciousness almost at once. For every minute that passes without defibrillation and CPR, chances of survival decrease by around ten per cent.

Over 30,000 cardiac arrests happen out of hospital in the UK every year but currently less than one in 10 survive. The BHF want to create a nation of lifesavers in a bid to boost these shocking survival rates. The charity is campaigning for defibrillators to be made more accessible and recognisable to the public, and want all young people to be taught CPR and PAD awareness at school.

Fiona Matthews from Bartestree Football Cub said “We are delighted to have been given this vital life-saving equipment. The defibrillator is located in Bartestree’s Sports Pavilion, meaning that local people have the best chance of survival should they suffer a cardiac arrest in the vicinity.

We’re keen to get as many people as possible trained in CPR and defibrillator awareness and are planning to organise training sessions which will be open to local residents as well as members of the sports clubs who use the pavilion and playing fields.”

To date the BHF have helped place over 13,000 life-saving defibrillators in communities around the UK. To find out more about defibrillators and how to place one in your organisation or community visit bhf.org.uk.

Knighton

BIG LOTTERY GRANT - Knighton and District Community Centre is one of 11 projects across Wales to receive a grant from the latest round of the Big Lottery People and Places Programme. The funding of £23,730 is for a capital development grant which is the first stage of the centre applying for a full grant to fund its Big Ren project.

The grant will enable the organisation to complete the preparatory capital work in order to submit an application for the refurbishment and redevelopment of the community centre in Knighton, Powys.

This will enable the organisation to create a thriving community hub that can better accommodate existing activities as well as a range of new activities and displaced community services. This grant, over one year will pay for professional fees and planning fees.

Chairman of the Knighton and District Community Centre Committee Karen Plant stated that “we are so delighted and excited to be awarded this grant.

This is a significant first step in achieving our ambitious aspirations for the centre.”

Karen went on to say that “the committee has shown incredible commitment and drive in its bid to taking the centre on to its next stage of development. We have fast growing usage and demand which we are now having difficulty fully accommodating because of the outdated design and poor fabric of the building, and this grant will be the start of us addressing these and many other issues, if the centre is to survive long into the 21st century.”

Once the building design and planning stage has been fully completed the committee plans to submit for the full grant, which, if successful, will enable the centre to become a community hub designed to help combat the effects of poverty and support regeneration.

The longer term aim is to focus on the co-location of services, young unemployed, young families and support for the elderly, along with the long standing and traditional uses of the centre, such as entertainment, cultural and sports activities and supporting other organisations and charities to thrive in the town.

Main contact – Karen Plant on 07751221487. Further information can be found at the Big Lottery web site at biglotteryfund.org.uk/ wales.

ACTION TO DISRUPT WORK ON BURGHFIELD NUCLEAR MISSILE FACTORY -On March 2 a group from Knighton strongly opposed to the replacement of the Trident nuclear deterrent and including well-known activist Angie Zelter will be heading for Burghfield Atomic Weapons Establishment near Reading to take part in a Lockdown intended to disrupt work on new missile construction facilities.

This action is planned as just the start of a month of sustained daily action at the bomb factory aimed at drawing attention to the government’s policy of replacing the ageing Trident missile system, at an estimated cost of approximately £100 billion. The Knighton group was only last month involved with approximately 5000 demonstrators in a major day of protest in London at which a giant pink scarf, including sections made in Knighton, was wrapped around the Ministry of Defence and many of Westminster’s famous landmarks.

The Knighton group will be joined at Burghfield by protesters from all over the UK, as well as others from across Europe, in the hope that all gates to the Burghfield site can be blocked and the public’s attention drawn not only to the evil of developing new weapons of mass destruction but also to the colossal waste of money involved at a time of austerity and loss of essential public services.

Leominster

LEOMINSTER U3A - In February members were enthralled by speaker Gill Suttle as she described her 10 week journey alone across Syria on a pure-bred Arab stallion Madfaa in the late 1900s , which she called Between the Desert and the Deep Blue Sea.

Travelling north from Damascus and Homs following the Orontes valley of irrigated farmland she encountered Roman waterwheels, women washing fleeces in the river, and a magnificent Roman colonnaded street in the desert. In the western mountains she discovered many of the medieval crusader castles, from those of only one or two rooms, to some larger converted into humble dwellings, to the magnificent and world-famous Krak des Chevaliers. In the south, Christian villages speaking Aramaic- the language of Christ, and Kadesh, the site of a chariot battle by an Egyptian pharoah also spoke of millennia of history. This intrepid traveller assured her audience that women are protected in Muslim society so she felt very safe. Her talk was especially poignant in view of subsequent political events.

Walford

SOUTH HEREFORDSHIRE COTTAGE GARDEN SOCIETY – The speaker at the February meeting was Ross Barbour from Picton Gardens and Old Court Nurseries.

The subject was Roses Need Friends Too. He showed us many beautiful slides illustrating the benefits of diversifying our gardens. Roses should not be grown on their own but flourished when grown with other plants. He really emphasised how the whole garden, however small or large, gained from the introduction of a variety of plants, which in their turn attracted a wide range of insects and birds.

The speaker at our next meeting on Saturday, 2pm at Walford Village Hall, is Carrie Thomas from her seed company and nursery, Touchwood Plants.

Her subject will be Grow Something Different From Seed.

Just the right subject for this month when we are all looking forward to spring.

We have many interesting talks arranged for this year, plus visits to gardens and a holiday to visit Yorkshire Gardens.

Visitors to meetings are always welcome. Please call Tinker Parsons on 01989 561050 or visit our website at cgssh.org.uk.
