AFTER two years of hard work, an uncle and nephew stood back to admire their model of a Red Arrow — only to then discover the design of the jets had been changed.

Stephen Board, 52, and nephew Lance Sherepita, 28, had built their most ambitious model yet – a twin jet Hawk – as a third scale model of a Red Arrow.

But once they had finished the paintwork, they discovered the Red Arrows had decided to change the design of the tailfin.

They thought the display jets were keeping a special 50th anniversary Union Jack design on the tailfins, but it was announced just as they finished their hard work that the iconic planes would be opting for a new design.

Stephen's brother, Russell, said the pair had "just finished painting it all on and got it exactly as the Red Arrows and then they found out they were changing it".

It took the duo two years to make the impressive model, which was built from scratch to their own design.

Russell added: "They have been making models for years and years.

"The models get bigger and bigger every year. This is the biggest one and the most complex because of the twin jet engine."

Stephen, a welder from Tarrington, and Lance, a technician engineer from Canon Pyon, will take the model to shows around the country – once they have repainted the tailfin.
