IT'S easy to forget, as we go about our daily business, the hundreds of people who have walked the streets of Herefordshire long before us.

But one market town is set to go back in time for one weekend this summer when it hosts its medieval pageant.

Leominster will be transported to the fifteenth century as re-enactors bring the past to life and a living history encampment offers a taste of life in the town during the middle ages.

Organiser, David Fitzcourt, chairman of the Leominster Medieval Society, said: "We want to familiarise people on the rich medieval history of the town which is actually quite considerable. Some people are not even aware we had a monastery in the town or how important Leominster was as a wool exporting area.

"We also want to start putting Leominster back on the map and get people to visit the area."

The free medieval pageant is lined up for the weekend of June 13 and 14 and will be mainly based on the site of Leominster's old monastery site, close to the town's Priory Church.

The activities will open with a procession through the town on Saturday morning and include a living history encampment, demonstrations, medieval music and dance, firepower displays and skirmishes.

Re-enactors from various high profile groups will contribute their time and expertise to recreate Leominster's rich medieval history. The town will be decked out to create a period atmosphere.

"We are going to have a living history encampment on the site of the high altar behind the priory church," said Mr Fitzcourt.

"People will get to see how people lived and get a bit of a snapshot on the kind of lives people had back then in a way that's relevant to Leominster."

There will also be a medieval market in the churchyard and activities for children.

"The problem is that a lot of medieval architecture is hidden so people tend to walk past it," said Mr Fitzcourt. "But Leominster, being on the border, it certainly was fought over. It has been sacked several times."
