MORE than 150 people headed to a Herefordshire meadow to seek out the rare snake's head fritillaries.

They usually flower over two to three weeks in April and this year they were at their peak for Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s annual Fritillary Day at Lugg Meadow.

There were guided walks at the weekend and younger visitors joined HWT’s WildPlay team on a explorer trail.

Reserves manager, Neville Hart, said: “This year, the date for our event has proved to be spot on with the fritillaries at their best.

"Some years we’ve had to postpone and others have been cancelled entirely as the meadow is sometimes still under flood water in spring.”

For those who missed the event, the fritillaries are likely to be in bloom for the rest of the week.

Guided walk leaflets are available free at Lower House Farm (open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday) and the staff there will be happy to point you in the right direction.
