FEW people are aware of a new recycling centre that was built in the county – despite it costing £1 million.

Kington Recycling Centre was opened in April but town councillors claim that most residents are unaware of its location due to it being hidden away on Eardisley Road.

Cllr Ian Wood-Johnson was one of many expressing that view when the town council held their last meeting and asked Herefordshire Council to provide better signage.

Cllr Christine Forrester also said that staff at the recycling centre want the site to be open more often than the current Friday to Sunday times.

She added: “The centre is extremely important and we should be supporting them.

“Staff are concerned that there is no sign pointing to the site and we should be pushing Herefordshire Council to put a sign off the main road pointing to the site as people don’t know it’s there, meaning people don’t use it.

“Maybe it is meaningful wishing by the council that people don’t use it. The staff have also launched a petition to get the site open more.”

Cllr Sally Williams added that signs also needed to be placed at the supermarket telling tourists about the site.

A Herefordshire council spokesman added: “The Kington Household Recycling Centre, opened in April, is for use by local residents of Herefordshire for the deposit of their own household waste.

“Details of what household waste items may be recycled and the facility’s location are well advertised on the council’s website.”

Kington Town Council agreed to discuss the issue again in three months.
