THE North Herefordshire MP said the proposed constituency boundary changes would break the county up in "an illogical way."

The Boundary Commission for England has proposed changing the boundaries in Herefordshire, which would mean it was split into three, rather than two.

Bill Wiggin's North Herefordshire constituency would merge with South Shropshire, resulting in the northern tip being ten miles south of Shrewsbury.

The proposals mean that Mr Wiggin's seat is under threat, with his patch merging with that of South Shropshire Conservative MP, Philip Dunne.

Mr Wiggin said: "It is far too early in the process to assume anything regarding the impact of these proposed changes.

"There will be a series of public consultations later in the year where people can convey their sense of sadness that the proposals would see Herefordshire broken up in such an illogical way - particularly given the geographical features.

"Then the Boundary Commission will think again and finally in 2018 there will be a vote in the House of Commons."

Similar changes to the constituency boundaries were considered in and rejected in 2013.

Mr Wiggin added: "Last time, the proposals were worse for Herefordshire but these latest ones are still badly divisive.

"We should remain calm but determined until the end of the process remembering that the last set of proposed changes never materialised."

In the proposed changes Jesse Norman's South Herefordshire constituency remains largely unchanged. Ledbury and its surrounding villages would move west into a new seat with Malvern.
