THERE were dramatic scenes in Hereford yesterday (March 26) as firefighters tackled a huge fire in an old hospital building.

In images showing the aftermath of the fire, Victoria House in Eign Street can be seen with a badly damaged roof.

Hereford and Worcester fire service tackled the fire yesterday evening, and remained at the scene well into the night.

Passers-by stopped in the street to watch crews at work, with police also at the scene and the area cordoned off.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Six crews, plus the incident command unit from Ledbury and the aerial ladder platform from Worcester, were called to a derelict building, around 15 metres by 20 metres, on fire in Eign Street, Hereford.

"The incident was sectorised and the fire was fought using a total of eight jets. Gas and electrics were isolated.

"The incident was marked as pending closure at 11.01pm with a thermal imaging camera used at 3am and 7.45am to check for hot spots."
