IT is depressing to read (Hereford Times, March 28) that once again the political and juvenile ding-dong of bypass routes has been raised by the present council.
I believe that an independent consultation was commissioned within the last two to three years, presumably to show the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of alternative ways of speeding up traffic through the city.

Is that study available for anyone to read? If so, I would love to see how a new western crossing would do much for inner city traffic movement; it is surprising to me but presumably the council has studied it and satisfied itself.

Letters should not exceed 250 words and local issues take precedence.
As CPRE, the Countryside Charity, has so clearly said, “bypasses seldom work”. Look at Leominster. Its bypass has done little for town traffic. Surely, before embarking on grandiose schemes which would almost certainly exceed budget, it would be better to take another look at the consultants’ report which will have suggested alternatives.
Proper management of traffic lights would be a good start.
A road from the city centre to Rotherwas is needed. It was the preferred route before politics got involved and although it will be difficult and expensive, it will work and that is the most important consideration... surely?
