LEDBURY'S inaugural Seabass 7s proved to be an appropriate tribute to Jack Segust in whose memory they were arranged.

"When Jack was killed in an accident two years ago the club were determined to create a lasting memorial to him, and the Seabass 7s will now be held annually after the success of this event," said club chairman Steve Burgess.

"More than 350 players took part, with a senior competition running alongside under-16 and under-18 tournaments.

"Teams participated from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire and the combination of skilful, competitive rugby and a friendly family atmosphere ensured that the event will be popular with clubs in the years to come.

"A crucial goal of Ledbury RFC was to raise as much money as possible on the day for the West Midlands Air Ambulance service who worked so hard to save Jack’s life and indeed a significant sum will be donated."

Many organisations supported the tournament with donations and subsidised services and the club is extremely grateful to them.

Head coach Paul Rudland and his assistant Ben Smith expressed delight at the focus given to the tournament which included live coverage on BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester.

“This was a great opportunity for us to remember Jack and to help the Air Ambulance in the work they do,” said Rudland.

“That we have also shown a wide audience what a forward looking and welcoming club we are for players of all ages and abilities has been gratifying as we approach the start of a new season with high hopes of maintaining our progression of recent years.”
