HEREFORD judo star Stan Cantrill hopes for more medal success this month after coming away with a bronze at the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Veterans Judo Championships in Amsterdam.

Cantrill, who has won over 90 international medals as a veteran, will be competing for Wales at the British Championships in Walsall on October 17.

The veteran star is also set to be in action at the European Championships in Croatia next June, as well as the Commonwealth Games in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and the next World Championships in Fort Lauderdale in the USA.

The 70-year-old earned his bronze medal for Great Britain at the World Championships after overcoming Andrew Scamaroni of France and Kazakhstan’s Oryn Seidagalamov.

But he missed out on the top two prizes, with Switzerland’s Daniel Bongard claiming gold and Valentins Azarovs of Latvia silver.

Cantrill, who was competing in the up to 73kg category, said there is no feeling like representing your country.

“When you score ippon, when you stand on the podium, you don’t know whether to laugh or cry, you feel every emotion,” said Cantrill, who trains at Hereford Judo Club.

“I have been doing judo since I was a kid and entered my first World Championships in 1998.

“One day I will be happy to take a pipe and slippers but not yet. I’m still living the dream.”
