YOUNGSTERS from across the country descended on Hereford last Saturday to play at an under-17 national badminton tournament.

The event, held at Hereford Academy, saw Rory Farwell beat Luke Robinson from Worcester Performance Centre to win the boys singles before he teamed up with his twin Matthew to gain a bronze medal in the boys doubles.

Several members of Herefordshire Badminton Academy participated on the day and acquitted themselves well.

Stalwart Libby Warren, from John Masefield School, competed determinedly and, with Matthew Robinson, did well go get a bronze in a hard fought mixed doubles event.

Rachel McGill, chairman of Herefordshire Badminton Academy, believes the sport has come a long way in the county.

"We are now holding national tournaments with the help of a brilliant group of volunteers.

"Herefordshire should be proud of this event, which has been noted as one of the best run in the country."

Further junior events will be held on February 20 and March 5, which all local players are invited to.
