WELLINGTON Bowls Club now have full disabled access following a £10,000 grant from Sport England.

The club decided to put the wheels in motion to get three wheelchairs after a disabled player stated his interest to play the sport.

Paul Riches, son of club captain John Riches, has Downs Syndrome and needs a specially equipped wheelchair.

But now he is able to take part in matches at Wellington due to his new chair and an access ramp being fitted at the club.

"We are trying to make people aware that we have the facility for disabled people to play," said club spokesman Keith Brimley.

"Bowls is one of those sports that anyone can play – whether they're able bodied or disabled."

Wellington Bowls Club also received funding from Cargill, as well as having a share of green tokens awarded by Waitrose to support community projects.

On the green, Wellington are performing much better in the Tarmac League.

"For a few seasons, we have finished ninth or 10th, but at the moment, we're fourth in the league so are doing well," added Brimley.

"But we're always looking for new members."
